2006, BMX and the Olympic Games

Waalre, April 2006.

Opinion: BMX and the Olympic games

After the announcement last mid 2005, that BMX had become an Olympic discipline at the 2008 Olympic Games in China, a loud protest was heard by the bicycle track coaches of France, Australia and England.

Why? Well, because the UCI took the kilometre for men and the 500 meters for women out of their track program in favour of BMX. The coaches stated: “We will examine the possibilities to undo this ridiculous decision by the UCI”.

Also the concerned world top athletes in these disciplines stated, they could not understand why the UCI cancelled these most spectacular track cycling events.

The UCI had to take these measures in order not to exceed the number of athletes the UCI was allowed to sent to the Olympics.
